5 Points Local, a restaurant and yoga studio in the 5 Points Neighborhood on North Flores Street, joined ¡Por Vida!, a Metro Health healthy dining program. 5 Points Local will offer ¡Por Vida! meals from their gluten-free kitchen with a menu of offerings that highlight locally-sourced ingredients.
“We welcome 5 Points Local to San Antonio’s healthy dining community” says Anna Macnak, Metro Health’s Chronic Disease Prevention Dietitian,. “The 5 Points neighborhood has higher health disparities and chronic disease rates than the Bexar county average, making the significance of the availability of affordable, healthy options here even more important.”
A ¡Por Vida! registered dietitian analyzed several ¡Por Vida! approved entrées and sides options to be offered by 5 Points Local. All these food options follow the strict ¡Por Vida! nutritional criteria where a meal can be no more than 700 calories, 8 grams of saturated fat, zero grams of trans fat, 12 grams added sugar, and 750 mg of sodium. ¡Por Vida!-approved items may not be fried.
¡Por Vida! menu items available at 5 Point Local include: 5 Points Granola, the Shroom Bowl (mushrooms in a creamy cashew sauce over spaghetti squash), and the Karma Bowl (quinoa, roasted sweet potatoes, and black beans). All ¡Por Vida!-approved items are marked with the ¡Por Vida! logo for easy recognition.
“At 5 Points Local we are committed to offering delicious and locally sourced meals at affordable prices”, says Abby Johnson, manager of 5 Points Local. “Being part of the ¡Por Vida! program is a way to further demonstrate the high importance we place on building partnerships with local organizations to improve the health of the community.”
