Sue Sheff, a new meal kit delivery service in San Antonio, joined the ¡Por Vida! program, a restaurant recognition program that promotes healthy food options in the community. Betty and Randy Ewing, co-owners of Sue Sheff, founded the meal kit delivery service to simplify the work of planning home cooked meals.
Sue Sheff provides the meal ingredients along with step by step instructions for customers to easily prepare their own meals without the stress of shopping and measuring ingredients. ¡Por Vida! meals will be offered weekly including Baking Sheet Pork Chops with Potatoes and Fennel, Shrimp with Spinach and Rice, Smothered Beer Chops, Sloppy Buffalo Jos, Farro with Arugula and Sweet Potatoes, Tilapia with Strawberries and Ancho Chiles, Quinoa with Strawberries & Kale, Peppi Pasta, Chicken Chaat Masala, Pork Lettuce Wraps, Pork Tinga Tacos, and Roasted Achiote Chicken with Potatoes & Green Beans.
A ¡Por Vida! registered dietitian analyzed recipes that will be offered by Sue Sheff. All approved ¡Por Vida! meal options follow the nutritional criteria where a meal cannot exceed 700 calories, 8 grams saturated fat, 750 mg sodium (salt), 12 grams added sugar, and no deep-fried food items or foods that contain hydrogenated oils (trans-fat).
“Sue Sheff’s business model is a great fit for the ¡Por Vida! program, as it blends the convenience of dining out with the comfort of eating in one’s own home,” says Anna Macnak, dietitian with the Metropolitan Health District. “¡Por Vida! is not only offered in restaurants but also through catering services and now in meal kit delivery services.”
The business was named using a play on words after the expression sous chef, used in gastronomy business for the chef who is second in command in a kitchen. Similarly, Sue Sheff provides the back up to anyone who wants to be a “head chef” at home.
Betty is a retired elementary school teacher and sees Sue Sheff as providing others with the service that her family would have benefited during the years of carrying a career and raising three children.
“I used to imagine how great it would be if I could just swing by a drive through and be handed a shopping bag with all the ingredients for a home cooked meal. Now we can provide that service to others” says Ewing. “Being a part of the ¡Por Vida! program shows our customers that in addition to great tasting recipes, the care that goes into sourcing local ingredients, and the convenience of meal delivery; we offer meals that follow nutrition guidelines for maintaining or improving health.”
